How To Check Your Transmission Fluid

Changing transmission fluid

Fluid maintenance is a key component of keeping your car on the road for longer. Most everyone knows to check their oil regularly, but not as many know to take care of their transmission fluid as well. MINI of Escondido is about to clue in San Marcos drivers to how to check your transmission fluid as well as point you toward our great new car specials.

Checking Your Transmission Fluid, Step By Step

  1. Turn the car on, because you’ll need a warmed up engine to check your transmission fluid levels.
  2. Find the dipstick for the transmission fluid. On front-wheel drive cars, you’ll typically find it to the right of the oil dipstick. Consult your owner’s manual if you can’t find it.
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid, swishing it between your thumb and your pointer finger. You should find that the fluid is almost clear but has a slight tinge of pink to it. However, if it’s dirty or smells burnt, you should take your car in to get it serviced.
  4. With a rag, wipe the dipstick clean. Put it back in the vehicle after that. Pull it out once more and look at the level. If it’s under the marking for “full,” you should add more.
  5. With a funnel, add more transmission fluid until you hit the “full” marking. Be sure not to overfill it.

If you want or need someone else to check your transmission fluid for you, come to MINI of Escondido, who will happily serve San Diego customers.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

If you’re asking “how often do you check your transmission fluid?” you should know that it’s a monthly job. You should check all your fluids at this time, including transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and engine oil. You should check your owner’s manual for a more specific maintenance schedule.
